When I was a senior in high school, I picked up photography. During that time, I was living with my grandmother in Riverview. I photographed the things people normally didn't pay attention to, like the way the sun would hit the water of a lake I liked to sit at, and hidden spots of beauty in a park. I especially loved capturing animal characters, details of my grandfather's garden, and my brothers. My brothers mean the world to me and growing up we were always the odd ones out, but I wanted people to see the beauty in us. That we had a place, and we mattered. I've found that most of the people I love in my life often thought of themselves as ugly and or not good enough. I strive to find ways for them to see how incredible they are through my eyes.
That mission still stands today for anyone I come in contact with. There is a huge disconnect in the photography industry and who has access to quality portraiture.
Part of me thinks about my great grandmother, Isabel, and my Tio, Alex, and how badly I wished I had picked up a camera sooner, but thankfully my mom was a huge fan of taking photos as well and I keep those few precious photos we have of them as reminders of what photography means to me, my family, and the friends I call family.
